As I wandered along Palermo ’s streets, the smell of fresh fish, frying arancini and lemon zest mingled in the air. I was heading to a highly-recommended trattoria. I found it on a dark square near the port, which was a less than inviting setting. Yet inside, the 1950s neighbourhood restaurant was welcoming. The tables were covered with white tablecloths and the walls were hung with black and white family photos.
This summed up Palermo,The city’s layout is laced with narrow side streets that open onto squares lined with elegant mansions and markets.
