Manchester City will be reunited with Cole Palmer when they take on Chelsea in the FA Cup - meaning questions will be asked again on whether the Blues were right or wrong to sell him.
But why would Manchester City sell a 20-goal winger with unlimited potential for such a bargain price? How could they be so foolish? Why did Pep Guardiola get this one so wrong?
Maybe not. At that point, he was just as much another expensive Chelsea winger as anything else. An expensive gamble. However talented Palmer clearly was, there was no predicting that he would be as successful as he has been at Stamford Bridge. "We'll have to see what the plan is for next season, " Palmer said at Wembley to raise eyebrows. Guardiola said: "What is going to happen, I don't know. I understand he wants to be more active than the previous season."
Speaking to the Daily Mail, he said: “I said I would go on loan and play for a year so I was ready for first-team football more because I didn’t play a lot of minutes . But then Pep said ‘you’re either staying or you’re getting sold’ and so, yeah, I just got sold. On Friday, Guardiola further opened up on the conversation with Palmer that led to his exit, revealing for the first time that the youngster had been asking to leave for two years.
