For nearly a month now, the city of Rancho Palos Verdes has been drilling bore holes in an effort to find water that's trapped in the soil, exacerbating the Portuguese Bend landslide. While they've found some, next week they're going after one spot that they're hoping will result in a geyser of activity.Entire neighborhoods are being threatened by land movement that increased to one foot per week in some locations, following two years of heavy rains.

that could be pushing up on the bottom of the slide, making things worse. If they hit an artesian well, the water could shoot out. It could take two to six months to see an impact on ground movement. The city is anticipating it'll take until early September to complete the 20 planned bore holes. Meanwhile, residents face an existential risk due to the land movement every single day.

The idea is that water's been getting trapped by layers of thick and sticky clay, adding weight to the hillsides. Once they locate the water, they'll start to pump it out with hydraugers — the hope being that as the weight is relieved, the slide will slow. The groundwater level is a bit shallower than anticipated, and the slide zones are a bit deeper, according to David Copp, deputy director of public works for the city.
