Former president condemned former president for Cobre Panama closing
Almost five months into his term, Panama's president José Raúl Mulino, the hand-picked successor of his predecessor Laurentino Cortizo , has condemned the former president for his handling of the situation that resulted in First Quantum Minerals ' Cobre Panama mine shutting and the country facing US$56 billion in arbitration claims.
First, Quantum is spending $12-15 million a month to keep the mine on care and maintenance and prevent environmental damage at the site, which has not seen a formal closure or remediation effort. Illegal gold miners have also moved into part of the Cobre Panama concession.Mulino has indicated that talks could begin in 2025, once a third-party audit of the mine has been completed, in which he would seek to leverage his higher approval rating with the electorate to work towards a solution.
