Paralympic hero .SprintingSophia champions The Sun's GiveItBack campaign to provide support for parents of disabled children
TEAM GB Paralympian and TV presenter Sophia Warner is championing The Sun’s Give It Back campaign asking the Government to increase social care funding for disabled children.
She is now an ambassador for the organisation that supports children with brain injuries, one of 60 charities supporting our Give It Back campaign. She says: "I can see from my friends with disabled children everything is a fight. Parents are constantly being forced to make choices between themselves and their child."I had physiotherapy every day after school when I needed it as a child - now parents have to self-fund that sort of essential treatment. That should never happen.
Sophia also set up the Superhero Series — mass-participation sporting events for people with disabilities and their friends and families. Sophia says: "The idea is simple: fun, gutsy events where people with disabilities call the shots and don't have to worry about cut-off times or equipment restrictions."There’s such a growth in things like Tough Mudder and half marathons and triathlons. But if you have a disability and want to take part in an event it’s often not an option due to all the time and support you need.
"But I wanted to fund raise myself for myself. This enables people to do that. Some individuals have raised as much as £15,000 at Superhero Tri. Sophia says: “Back then, it was literally my mum, my dad and a dog watching me. Before London 2012 I had only run in front of 80 people."
