A new study suggests that children who witness their parents' divorce may be at a higher risk of developing stroke later in life. The research, conducted by scientists at Tyndale University and the University of Toronto, found that individuals with a history of parental divorce had a 61% increased likelihood of experiencing a stroke, even after accounting for other known risk factors.
Scientists have issued a warning to adults whose parents divorced during their childhood, suggesting they may be at a heightened risk of stroke. Research indicates that witnessing parental divorce as a child could increase the likelihood of experiencing a stroke by 60%. A stroke occurs when the blood supply to a portion of the brain is interrupted, resulting in the death of brain cells.
Researchers propose that experiencing high levels of stress at a young age, which can be a consequence of parental separation, might contribute to this increased risk. A study conducted by researchers at Tyndale University and the University of Toronto analyzed survey responses from 13,205 older Americans, revealing that 14% had experienced parental divorce during their childhood. Notably, even after accounting for other well-established stroke risk factors such as smoking, physical inactivity, lower income and education, diabetes, and limited social support, individuals with a history of parental divorce still exhibited a 61% higher probability of experiencing a stroke. The study's co-author, Professor Philip Baiden of the University of Texas at Arlington, emphasized that the association between parental divorce and stroke persisted even among participants who hadn't experienced childhood physical or sexual abuse and had at least one adult caregiver who provided a sense of safety. The researchers are currently exploring potential biological and social mechanisms that might explain this link. Professor Esme Fuller-Thomson of the University of Toronto suggests that prolonged exposure to high levels of stress hormones, potentially triggered by parental divorce, could have lasting effects on the developing brain and an individual's ability to manage stress. This research raises the possibility that family history could be incorporated into stroke prevention and education initiatives, enabling targeted outreach to individuals at an elevated risk
