Parents branded 'obnoxious' after controversial Easter egg hunt
Easter

It's traditional for many people to crate an Easter Egg hunt for their children over the bank holiday - but some parents have caused a stir

Parents have been divided over a neighbourhood Easter egg hunt due to its controversial start time, with one woman questioning whether the organisers had 'no shame'. Easter Sunday is an annual highlight in the calendar for many people and, though it is a significant religious festival in Christianity commemorating Jesus Christ rising from the dead, it has transcended its religious roots and become widely embraced in mainstream culture.

Many non-Christians also mark Easter, and the beloved Easter egg hunt remains a firm favourite for countless families, regardless of their faith. Traditionally, small chocolate eggs are concealed around the home or outdoors for children to seek out, with a prize often awarded to whoever discovers the most. One woman took to Mumsnet's Am I Being Unreasonable forum, posting under a name inspired by Tim Burton's film adaptation of Lewis Carroll's book, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland; Alice Absolum. In a post titled 'Easter egg hunt at 6.30am', 'Alice' said: 'Both the parents outside with the kids, several kids running around screaming at 6.30am. Do people have no shame?' She went on to add: 'If it was me, I'd be feeling so guilty and anxious if I was outside with them for some reason. Do people not feel like that? Or ignore the emotion? Or maybe the children wanted to do it at 6.30am and they have no boundaries.' In the comments section, opinion was split, with some believing that as Easter only comes once a year, Alice's frustration wasn't warranted, while others labelled the parents 'obnoxious' for beginning the hunt so early. One Mumsnet user said: 'I'm pretty sure it will only be once a year. But yes, they should keep it down.' Another said: 'Yes 6.30am is inconsiderate. Unfortunately a lot of people are.' But a third said: 'Can't see myself getting worked up about this. Let them have their fun.' Alice replied: 'Even if it woke you up?' A fourth said: 'I think it's fine. It's a bit of fun for 5 mins for kids. It's only once a year.' Another commented: 'Oh my god this is so miserable! It's once a year, for a few year max. Your kids are only little once, make some memories with them'. However, many people disagreed with this perspective. One person said: ''It's only once a year' is ridiculous. If people lack consideration for an Easter egg hunt they'll lack consideration on other occasions. S****y and unnecessary.' Someone else said: 'YANBU , I'm sat here waiting for my 5 year old to wake up and run in, his hunt is set up for first thing this morning indoors. Outside hunts should be later on at a reasonable time.' Another said: 'Cue all the virtue-signalling early risers... Yes, highly inconsiderate. There's absolutely no need for an Easter egg hunt to be at 6.30 in the morning.' And another commented: 'Obnoxious behaviour from the parents.' One person commented: 'I think that's rude and selfish at any time of year. I used to keep my children at a considerate volume, inside the house until at least nine at weekends and even then if they started shouting or screaming in the garden I'd tell them to come in. 'Remind them not everyone is awake. The parents could have easily put a film on, or had an inside egg hunt.' Another user added: 'Absolute a***holes. Who on earth thinks that's okay'. At the time of writing, 73% of Mumsnet users voted Alice was not being unreasonable with her complaints about the early morning Easter egg hunt.
