Several schools across the Blackburn and Darwen area have been hit by high levels of absences as the bug

On Wednesday night I treated my daughter and one of her friends to tea at a lovely little pub in Goosnargh.

Remarkably, the illness only lasted about 12 hours, but most schools have a policy of insisting pupils stay off for 48 hours after being sick so she stayed at home on the Friday too. By this point, she was her usual 'full of beans' self, and I have to confess that my insistence on hand-washing and no touching each other fell by the wayside with my false sense of security.

Given my own traumatic experience of the bug, which is said to be spreading across several schools in the Blackburn and Darwen area, you'll understand how horrified I was when a friend informed me that on the Friday she had sent her son, who was suffering from the bug, to play in her daughter's bedroom. She reasoned it was better for him to have it over the weekend so that the 48-hour policy would mean he could return to school on Monday or at the latest Tuesday.

There was one particularly horrific time when had, foot and mouth was making the rounds. I didn't know this until the time but apparently, if you've not had a childhood illness when you were a kid, catching it as an adult means you'll have a much more severe form.
