From next summer, the Royal School for the Blind will no longer offer respite stays owing to funding pressures
Parents have spoken of the “devastating” closure of a residential provision at a school for visual and complex needs after it was deemed to be financially unviable. As pressures mount on the Royal School for the Blind in Wavertree , governors and trustees have taken what they describe as the “difficult” decision to close its residential home from next summer.
“Over the last two years, we have made a range of strategic and operational decisions to reduce expenditure and improve income, but the inflationary impact on running costs and staff costs have far exceeded these measures.” School officials said the forthcoming increase to employer National Insurance costs and staff pay increases had also added to the decision to close the residential building.
