Assistant Chief Constable Becky Riggsl, has urged parents to report any intimate images they find on a child's phone.

Parents should check their children's smartphones until the age of 18, according to the national police lead on child protection.

She told The Sunday Times: 'We in the police talk about the sharing of images from a criminal perspective. Parents should want to protect their children. 'In the eyes of the law, children means the age group until they reach their 18th birthday. There are parents and children who might find that difficult.'

Police in England and Wales recorded 107,000 sexual abuse and exploitation offences in 2022, a 7.6 per cent rise on 2021. About 5,000 cases involved children sharing naked photos. The average age of an offender was 14
