A poll has found that of 500 adults who struggle to afford everyday hygiene items, 83 per cent personally cut back on personal care to ensure there's enough for their children through the school holidays

Adults living in hygiene poverty are sacrificing deodorant, toothpaste, or even a hot shower to ensure their family can have a meal. A poll of 500 individuals who struggle to afford everyday hygiene items revealed that 83 per cent personally cut back on daily essentials to ensure there's enough for their children through the school holidays.

7 per cent have been forced to use a single sanitary pad for the duration of an entire period, while 13 per cent share personal hygiene products with others to save money. The research was commissioned by Unilever and The Hygiene Bank, in partnership with Boots, to launch its product donation initiative in store when customers buy their own personal care products, for the fourth year running.

"Making a small contribution this summer could have a huge impact for someone in hygiene poverty, and we are delighted we are able to support those in need through this initiative." The research discovered that 75 per cent of parents are anxious about the increased costs during the school holidays and being able to afford essentials. Yet despite the struggles, 72 per cent admitted their children are unaware of their situation as they ensure they never lack essential items.

Even with this, a majority of 55 per cent feel uncomfortable discussing their inability to afford hygiene necessities with others and a concerning 52 per cent aren't informed about resources or services that could assist them with their issues. Consequently, a significant 85 per cent agree that more action is required to publicise the challenges of hygiene poverty.
