In the most dramatic men’s basketball game of the Olympic tournament to date, France scraped by Japan, 94-90, in overtime after trailing by four in the final minute of regulation. France, playing on home soil as a 17.5-point favorite, forced overtime when guard Matthew Strazel made a four-point play with 10 seconds remaining. Japan Coach Tom Hovasse chose not to dispute the call in his postgame comments, and France Coach Vincent Collet said the four-point play was “like a miracle, for sure.
” French star Victor Wembanyama posted 18 points, 11 rebounds and six assists, and he shook off a slow start by hitting several clutch shots late. Collet praised his “champion’s maturity and champion’s mentality” for stepping up to bring home the victory. France will face Germany in its final group stage game Friday and is in excellent position to advance to the quarterfinals in Paris next week.
