Ahead of competing in her third Olympics, Ellie Carpenter says she wants more female athletes to get money-smart to take advantage of the rising pay on offer.
Already a subscriber? An opportunity to play soccer at one of the best football clubs in France gave Matildas star Ellie Carpenter something female athletes once considered an impossible dream: enough money to support herself.
When you get your first contract, you want to spend it. But it’s so important to be smart with your money because your career is not forever. It’s a big jump from Carpenter’s first professional contract in the local women’s tournament, A-League Women, which paid her $500 per season. “I was stoked,” she laughs.
One difference for the Matildas going into this tournament is the fact they are now household names, and many can support themselves financially. This is becomingLast November, the American women’s soccer league signed a record $US240 million broadcast deal with Amazon, CBS, ESPN and Scripps. Earlier this year, a report from SponsorUnited into women’s marketing partnerships claimed the number of deals had increased by more than 22 per cent year-on-year.
“It’s important to educate the young footballers coming through because now the money is only going to be growing,” she says.Carpenter knew she wanted to represent Australia when she was 12 years old, but her chance at Olympic gold came earlier than most. She was scouted to play for the mini Matildas at 14 years old and before her sixteenth birthday, was playing for the national team.
