Manchester council has set out how it plug a multi-million pound budget gap
Higher parking fees, £180 litter fines and increased social care charges could be introduced in Manchester while council tax is set to rise by 5 per cent as the town hall tries to close a multi-million pound gap in its budget.
This could save the council £7.5m over three years. Meanwhile, a review of parking charges at council-owned car parks, aimed at 'aligning' them with privately-owned car parks, is estimated to generate an extra £1.5m next year. In total, 42 full-time equivalent jobs would lost across the council over three years if all of the savings options being considered are taken forward. However, the large majority would be through deleting vacancies, the council said.
“We have done transformative work in areas such as social care, children’s services and homelessness to help people earlier and reduce the need for more costly support. Despite this, we are still seeing care costs surging in line with the rest of the country and will need to continue to innovate.
