A Stockport couple received a £100 parking fine despite a faulty ticket machine at Peel Shopping Centre. They argue the new 'pay on exit' system failed to recognize their number plate, leaving them with no payment option.
A Stockport couple were left seething after receiving a £100 parking fine at Peel Shopping Centre, despite the ticket machine being out of order. Stephane Pendered and his wife experienced what he described as a 'confusing' new 'pay on exit' system on November 9, which requires drivers to input their vehicle registration to calculate the parking fee upon departure.
The system, which uses cameras to log the car's entry, failed to recognise their number plate when they tried to pay after shopping for about 30 minutes. Ocean Parking, who manage the site, admitted the ticket machine was 'faulty', but insisted that didn't exempt the Pendereds from payment, suggesting they should have used the RingGo app instead. Stephane argued that the machine offered no alternative payment method and it wasn't 'obvious' to use RingGo. Despite efforts to contact the company using an emergency number, the couple eventually left without paying, feeling they had no other choice. 'You could key in your correct reg until you were blue in the face, it gave you the same answer every time,' said 54 year old Stephane from Stockport. 'When I went to have another go before we left there was a huge queue of people and I would say maybe half of the people there were having the same problem and it wasn't just us.', reports the Manchester Evening News . 'In the end we just left because our understanding was, this is the new system, it's pay on exit and not pay on entry. (Pay on entry) was the old method which we paid for via RingGo. It wasn't obvious.' 'Because everyone else was having the same problem, it was a new system and we just decided to go. I don't know how they can say we owe anything anyway because the camera didn't recognise us when we arrived. Our Christmas has been good but it's been a little bit spoiled by the fact that we've had to pay these people £10
