A man from Burton Latimer, Northamptonshire, claims that contesting a £500 parking fine has caused significant mental health strain and disrupted his studies. Dan Garrett received two parking charge notices from Excel Parking Ltd after visiting the Energie Fitness car park in Kettering in April and May 2024. He stated that he entered his car registration at the gym, which offers members four hours of free parking compared to the standard 90 minutes, and was fined £516.
88 for exceeding the time limit. \Mr Garrett expressed that the process has caused him considerable stress, negatively impacting his mental health. He further stated that it has hindered his studies at The Open University as he has been emotionally drained by the situation. Mr Garrett, who frequented Energie Fitness three to four times a week, explained that the parking dispute has disrupted his routine. He said, 'This ordeal has completely thrown me off,' adding that he no longer goes to the gym due to the stress associated with it. \Following contact from the BBC, Energie Fitness confirmed that Mr Garrett had signed in on one of the disputed days. Mr Garrett claimed he participated in a telephone mediation through the court where Excel Parking Ltd offered to reduce the fine by £100, an offer he declined. Excel Parking stated that Mr Garrett has not provided any evidence of his membership at the gym. A representative from Excel Parking Services commented, 'A maximum stay of 90 minutes is permitted at the Tanners Gate Retail Park; an exception is made for gym customers when their vehicle registration is entered into a touchscreen terminal. 'On the dates in question Mr Garrett's vehicle was observed on site beyond the maximum period permitted without his vehicle registration having been entered into the terminal.'There was neither an increase in parking charge activity nor a decrease in the use of the terminal on the dates in questions.' The representative added, 'The first contact he made was after the court claim had been issued.' A court date for the case has not yet been scheduled
