People who develop Parkinson's disease before the age of 50 may have been born with disordered brain cells, according to new research

Now, new research led by Professor Clive Svendsen who researches biomedical sciences and medicine at Cedars-Sinai Medical Centre in LA, has analysed how these neurons could have functioned before patients developed the disease.

The scientists generated a special type of stem cells, known as pluripotent stem cells , from three patients with young-onset Parkinson's - people younger than 50.The Chase star Paul Sinha reveals he has Parkinson's disease at 49 Two key abnormalities were identified in the dopamine neurons which had been grown in a petri dish. One was the accumulation of a protein called alpha-synuclein, which occurs in most forms of Parkinson's disease.

"It appears that dopamine neurons in these individuals may continue to mishandle alpha-synuclein over a period of 20 or 30 years, causing Parkinson's symptoms to emerge."
