The reason for Gardner Street's steep climb up to Partickhill goes back almost 30,000 years (a number arrived at with the help of a Glaswegian wooly rhinoceros) and ties the city of Glasgow to Boston, Massachusetts
It is perhaps the most photographed street in Glasgow's west end , and everyone and their granny will tell you stories about cycling down Gardner Street, hurtling toward busy Dumbarton Road.
But as a now-viral post on This Is My Glasgow details, there is an ancient reason for Gardner Street's steep climb up to Partickhill, dating back almost 30,000 years - and it ties the city of Glasgow to Boston, Massachusetts. When you scale Gardner Street, with calves feeling like they're ready to burst as you reach the top, you have just climbed one of Glasgow's many drumlins.
Most of the north of the city lies in the drumlin field, which extends from the Kilpatrick Hills south of Loch Lomond to just beyond Shettleston in the East End, with the last drumlins just south of the Clyde. In Glasgow, Drumlins are 13.3 metres in height on average. "The processes of drumlin origin ... remain enigmatic," writes Menzies, with movement of material under the glacier itself considered a likely cause.
