The café was recently handed a new lease which would see its rent rise by 19,000%
The party leading Ashfield District Council claims a campaign group fighting to keep a community café open "couldn't care less" about the facility as a legal dispute continues. The Rumbles Community Café, based on Sutton Lawn in Sutton-in-Ashfield, was recently handed a lease which would hike their rent to £10,000 a year.
The dispute is now likely to end up in court and one of the key issues is the running of the public toilets, which the 'Friends of Rumbles Café' group says will be a major liability for the facility. The group submitted a Freedom of Information request to find out how much Ashfield District Council was currently spending on running the toilets. The council recently responded to say that it does not hold the information, saying it is "not possible" to find out the figure.
When asked why the council did not know how much it cost to run the toilets, a spokesperson for the Ashfield Independents said: "The toilets have previously been maintained by council staff as part of their jobs which is why we can't put a figure on it. Rumbles need to pay up for their rent, their utilities and maintain the toilets, just like every other community café in Ashfield does.
"They couldn't care less about Rumbles. If the Labour Party and our current Tory MP actually cared about jumping on injustice instead of bandwagons, then they should be lobbying Central Government and Nottinghamshire County Council to fund such initiatives."
