An agitated man forced open an emergency exit on a JetBlue flight and tried to jump out during an argument with his girlfriend about her mobile phone. The JetBlue Flight 161, departing from Boston Logan International Airport, was stopped on the tarmac after the man pulled open a plane door and triggered an emergency slide. The plane, headed to San Juan in Puerto Rico, had just started taxiing and was still on the ground when the incident occurred around 7:30 pm on Tuesday, January 7.
According to a passenger, the man wanted to see his girlfriend's phone, but she refused. He then leaped out of his seat, ran down the aisle, and opened the emergency door. The plane's pilot reported the incident to Air Traffic Control, stating that a passenger had opened an emergency exit door and attempted to jump out. The pilot also said that an air marshal tackled the man as soon as he opened the door. Once they brought him to the ground, passengers felt safe. The JetBlue passenger, whose name was not released, was expected to face charges and be arraigned Wednesday. Massachusetts State Police spokesperson Tim McGuirk said the door was opened “suddenly and without warning”. The airline confirmed the incident and said the flight was eventually swapped to another aircraft and landed safely in San Juan.
