Sifnos aims to become one of the world’s top 10 hiking destinations after restoring its old footpaths to foster slow travel. It certainly delivers.

Already a subscriber? We’re walking along a wide marble path that appears to hover above the cobalt hues of the Aegean. Gulls circle above and a gaggle of horned goats bleats and scatters either side of us.

Above the whine of cicadas, we hear music and soon a young man wearing aviator sunglasses appears on the path holding a large gilt Christian icon in an embossed wooden frame. He’s headed to Agios Sostis at the bottom of the cliff. This desire to protect culture was the impetus behind the Municipality of Sifnos’ decision to upgrade and link the island’s maze of walking trails. To do this they collaborated with Paths of Greece, a social co-operative with a vision for Greece to become one of the world’s top 10 hiking destinations by restoring its old footpaths to foster slow travel.

We love the Hidden Sides of Sifnos nine-kilometre trail from the hilltop town of Apollonia to the seaside village of Vathiwhere a refreshing swim is followed by ice-cold beers, marinated octopus, an aromatic goat stew slow-cooked in a traditional tsikali pot, and salad with ruby tomatoes, olives, mizithra cheese and capers.
