Mounjaro will be made available on the NHS but the rollout will be phased, with only those with the highest need getting the jabs first

Mounjaro, made by US pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly, is vying for market share among a new class of drugs originally designed to treat diabetes which have been shown to aid dramatic weight loss. Millions of eligible patients must wait up to 12 years to get a new drug dubbed the “King Kong of weight-loss jabs” after officials decided the health service could only cope with a phased rollout.

It means the postcode lottery over NHS weight management services is likely to continue for several years – with local servicesthe firm recognised there is “significant unmet need and high demand” for weight-loss drugs and its goal is to “make our medicines accessible to people that need them”. The US-based firm said it continues to add manufacturing and supply capacity around the world to meet global demand, having invested more than $20bn since 2020.

Final draft guidance published by Nice shows NHS England requested that Mounjaro is rolled out over a period of 12 years. The watchdog recommends prioritising patients receiving care from specialist weight management services who will be able to access the drug within 90 days of the guidance being published on 23 December.

He said: “We look forward to working with NHS England to ensure we can best meet the current unmet need of people living with obesity and deliver on the Government’s obesity goals.”
