The comedian, who is now based in London with his wife Cat Deeley and their two sons, has told how his first appearance on the RTE show in the 1990s was a wake-up call
Patrick Kielty has shared an insight into a challenging moment early in his comedy career during his first-ever slot on the Late Late Show with host Gay Byrne, revealing that his dark humour about The Troubles fell flat.
He said there was "very little whimsy" in his routine. "The early 90s in Northern Ireland was grim, and whilst a new generation of comedians like me were trying to make sense of the conflict by finding the absurdity in it all, it affected us all, whether we thought it did or not." A few years later, he was on the stand-up circuit in Belfast hitting a chord with audiences by finding grim humour around what became known as The Troubles.
In a new BBC4 documentary, he delves into the hope and optimism starting to bubble up on both sides of the border around that time with the excitement around the national soccer team and emerging musical superstars. "There seems to be this idea that, well, Ireland joined the EU because Ireland was a poor country. 'They got all our taxes, and so we paid into the EU as Brits, and then they built all the roads and infrastructure, and we essentially paid for the development of their country'."
