The Patriots had numerous chances to put the Jets out of their misery and end a game that never should’ve been close. The offense couldn't.
But it wasn’t easy, something that presents bigger-picture concerns even if the mood after the first win of the season softened the frustration of a putrid second-half performance by the offense. Here’s the concern: The Patriots offense is running out of excuses. The offensive line is mostly healthy, returning three starters who missed the opener. The group has had enough time, three weeks in, to learn Bill O’Brien’s offense.
Of course, there is good news. The Patriots won the game, and it’s a lot easier to make the necessary changes and corrections after a victory. They avoided the disaster of an 0-3 start — especially with a trip to thelooming. They moved the ball well in the first half, amassing more than 200 yards of offense, even if points didn’t always follow. They didn’t turn the ball over. The running game, while still far from efficient, showed signs of improvement, averaging 3.9 yards per rush.
