The New England Patriots are releasing former Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster.
New England Patriots wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster reacts after a first down catch during an NFL football game, Thursday, Dec. 7, 2023, in Pittsburgh. That is being done to help Smith-Schuster land elsewhere before the start of the 2024 season after the Patriots refurbished their wide receiver room. Since signing with the Patriots during the 2023 offseason, Smith-Schuster has dealt with knee issues that stem from injuries over his football career.
Over the next five years with the team, Smith-Schuster would become a rugged, reliable slot receiver who played well opposite Antonio Brown in his first two seasons in the NFL. 2018 was Smith-Schuster’s best season, racking up 1426 receiving yards and seven touchdowns. Since that time, Smith-Schuster has primarily gone downhill. He missed time in 2019 with a knee injury, and though 2020 represented a small bounce-back year, he missed almost all of 2021 with a shoulder injury.it is unlikely to be Pittsburgh. While they are still in the middle of the Brandon Aiyuk sweepstakes, at this point in his career, Smith-Schuster is unlikely to represent a massive upgrade over what the team has at wide receiver.
