How do you stop this historic, 50th-anniversary show becoming 'The Beatle'? Like this
At the beginning of Paul McCartney’s Pyramid Stage show, it was hard not to bear his record – “oldest ever Glastonbury headliner” – in mind. As an animated guitar with bright white strobes shooting out of it and a slightly naff Beatles montage were projected on huge screens behind the man, who emerged in a navy buttoned-up suit to open with “Can’t Buy Me Love” and a few songs from Wings, I began to wonder if this might feel like a tribute act to himself.
Except – how do you please an audience of 200,000 with songs to galvanise and unite, without this concert becoming “The Beatle”? Midway through, McCartney acknowledged those expectations himself: “When we play a Beatles song all the phones go up and it’s like looking out into a galaxy of stars.” When they play a new song, “it’s like a black hole. But we don’t care, we’ll play it anyway”.
