Late comedian Paul O'Grady became a dad in his teens, with many of his fans surprised to learn he had a daughter when she left a heartbreaking tribute at his funeral
Paul O'Grady was loved by many for his drag act Lily Savage and his big-hearted work with animals - but some of the late star's fans were surprised to learn that he was also a devoted dad.
Becoming a dad Some of Paul's fans might have been surprised to learn that he had a daughter, but the star actually became a father years before finding fame when he was just 18. He had a brief relationship with friend and work colleague Diane Jansen, who was older than him at 27, and Sharyn was born in May 1974.
"I kept waiting, hoping for a rush of fatherly love as I lifted her nervously out of the cot," he wrote. "She was a sweet little thing, yet I felt distant. I was ashamed of myself. What was wrong with me?" Childhood memories Paul admitted that Sharyn was secondary school age by the time they properly got to know each other, but his daughter shares some interesting childhood memories in the ITV show. She recalls: "I was about seven, and I was having a birthday, and my dad said, ‘Oh, I’ve got a great surprise for you!
"I also remember going to the shop and getting tights for him. The guy would say, ‘Are you coming in for your dad’s tights?’ And I’d be like, ‘Yeah! Have you got a tan and black?’ That was just normal." Proud dad and grandad Paul and Sharyn had a close bond as she got older, and the star gave his daughter away at her wedding where he also made a father of the bride speech. He said afterwards: "It was a really great day. Sharon looked fabulous and Philip is a smashing fella. They fit together like a pan and a lid. She looked like a Disney princess."
