Pittsburgh Pirates rookie Paul Skenes made a quick impression on Los Angles Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani. Skenes struck out Ohtani on three fastballs that reached 100 mph during their first meeting of what became a 10-6 Pittsburgh win. Ohtani exacted revenge later, dinging Skenes for a two-run homer and adding a single.

Pittsburgh Pirates starting pitcher Paul Skenes delivers to a Los Angeles Dodgers batter during the first inning of a baseball game in Pittsburgh, Wednesday, June 5, 2024. Los Angeles DodgersShohei Ohtani celebrates as he stands on first after hitting a single off Pittsburgh Pirates starting pitcher Paul Skenes during the fifth inning of a baseball game in Pittsburgh, Wednesday, June 5, 2024.

“Good composure,” Pirates manager Derek Shelton said about Skenes. “He’s going to give up home runs. But when you have an error and you load the bases, and again, having to grind through this lineup, it’s not easy. There’s All-Stars throughout it. So very impressed with how composed he stayed.” Yet Skenes and catcher Yasmani Grandal both stressed he’s far from a finished product. That’s what makes working with Skenes so tantalizing for the 35-year-old Grandal. He’s on the ground floor of something that could turn out to be pretty special.

“If he would’ve had the offspeed going, I think he would have been able to go six, seven ,” Grandal said. “I wouldn’t have been surprised if he even got eight.”
