Qantas would likely have gone bust if it had been unable to use internal labour hire to stay competitive, the airline has claimed.
Appearing before a senate inquiry into the government’s contentious industrial relations legislation, representatives from Qantas said the airline’s viability relied on arrangements that allowed it to employ staff through separate entities.

Picture: NCA NewsWire / David Swift “That could, in turn, compromise the viability of services particularly regional ones, undermine job security and create market distortions by way of an unlevel playing field in circumstances where competitors will not be captured by the proposed reforms.”
Under the proposed changes, employees, employers or unions will be able to apply to the Fair Work Commission to require the labour hire workers to be paid at least the wages in the workplace agreement. Mr Safe claimed the airline was “a legacy business operating in a highly competitive global market, with low barriers to entry for new competitors”.
