June’s long days provide the perfect time for getting outside and exploring the fantastic countryside we have on our doorstep. One way to make the most of the longer days ahead of the summer solstice later this month is by embarking on a sunset walk.as one of the best places in the UK for a sunset hike. The national park ranked only second after the South Downs in the list of ten regions across the country.
Researchers analysed factors including sunset times, cloud coverage, and the number of hiking trails to find the best regions for aThe South Downs topped the list with a sunset score of 9.67 out of 10, thanks to a high concentration of hiking trails. But the Peak District followed closely behind with a score of 9.22, helped by its vast area of 1,438 square kilometres and a reasonably low average cloud coverage of 49.7 per cent.
Blacks recommends catching the sunset from one of the Peak District’s gritstone edges, which offer panoramic sunset views. If you are planning on walking around sunset make sure you are prepared by bringing appropriate gear such as a torch, headlamp and reflective clothing. Rounding up the top three were the Mourne Mountains in Northern Ireland.
Elsewhere in the top ten, Snowdonia in North Wales ranked in seventh place, with a sunset score of 8.57, while the Lake District followed in eighth place with a score of 8.56. The Yorkshire Dales came in ninth place with a score of 8.33. Natalie Wolfenden, Author and outdoor enthusiast at Blacks, said: “Sunset hikes are becoming increasingly popular, with searches increasing by 191per cent in the past three months.
Summer is the perfect time to go on a sunset hike. The skies are much clearer, making for better sunsets, and the warmer weather helps hikers to be more comfortable. ”
