Peak flows are exciting for headline writers and adrenaline junkies, but outfitters derive the bulk of their business in July when school’s out.

Peak flows from spring runoff have come, and in some cases gone, and Colorado rafting outfitters are settling in for what figures to be an outstanding rafting season in the northern and central mountains, thanks to ample snow last winter.
On the Cache La Poudre west of Fort Collins, the peak occurred last week, according to Brad Modesitt, owner of Mountain Whitewater. “July should be a great month to go rafting for all levels,” Williams said of conditions on the Arkansas. “We’re saturated,” said Bob Hamel, chairman of the Arkansas River Outfitters Association, who anticipates sustained and prolonged flows this summer. “Our reservoirs are full.
