Steven Knight spoke to the ECHO about his connection to Merseyside as the new stage adaptation of Peaky Blinders arrives at the Liverpool Empire
Steven Knight has never been afraid to take risks. The writer has forged a legendary career in the industry and the stylised approach he adopted for his masterpiece show, Peaky Blinders , has made the crime drama stand out and become the global success that has cemented his place in television history.
The Who Wants to be a Millionaire? co-creator incorporated a dance sequence into one of the later seasons of Peaky Blinders when Rambert performed a ballet at the country home of the protagonist, Tommy Shelby. The scene was a hit with viewers and this inspired Benoit and Steven to seriously chat about whether it could be the basis for a standalone theatre show.
"What tended to happen is that some people, particularly blokes, were dragged there but the great thing is is that when they left, they loved it. It goes back to Rambert in the 20s with that remit of getting people who don't know they like dance to watch dance." Steven is excited for the show to arrive in Liverpool next month as the city is a spiritual home for Peaky Blinders. Although the series is set in Birmingham, many scenes were filmed in Merseyside and Steven said the city's aesthetic was vital to bringing his grand vision to life.
He said: "There's a load of locations in Liverpool that you can't find anywhere else that evoke the 20s and 30s. we shot a lot of stuff in the street where Ringo Starr was born. That street was amazing."
