The pedestrian was taken to Royal Preston Hospital for treatment following the incident between J10 and J9 near Burnley

Lancashire Constabulary, North West Ambulance Service and National Highways were called to the incident at 1.23am today . The westbound carriageway was closed for more than four hours between junction 10 and junction nine near Burnley.

Police said the pedestrian suffered 'serious head and leg injuries' and was taken to Royal Preston Hospital for treatment. Diversions were put in place on the motorway as emergency services responded and the closure was lifted shortly before 6am.A force spokesperson told LancsLive: "We were called at 1.23am today to the M65 westbound between junctions nine and 10, to reports of a road traffic collision. A car was in collision with a pedestrian.

"The pedestrian suffered serious head and leg injuries and was taken to the Royal Preston Hospital. The carriageway was reopened at approximately 5.50am." In a statement at the time, National Highways said: "Lancashire Police currently lead the response to a serious collision involving a pedestrian and a car which occurred at approximately 01:24. The carriageway is expected to remain closed for at least several hours.

"National Highways have resources in attendance to assist with traffic management. In addition to this unplanned closure, there is also a planned closure of the M65 eastbound between J8 and J10 until 06:00 due to roadworks."
