Derren Fox, a 52-year-old zoological field assistant at Signy Island Research Station in the South Orkney Islands, will be spending Christmas monitoring penguin colonies. He plans to check on the chinstrap and Adelie penguin colonies before joining other station members for sledding, snowman building, and a traditional Christmas meal cooked by the station leader, Sarah Clark. After the meal, Fox intends to relax with a cheesy festive movie.
While Fox is counting penguins, Sarah Clark, the 42-year-old station leader, is preparing a Christmas dinner for the small team of five at Signy. Clark, who has lived in North Wales for the past six years, says the Signy tradition is for the station leader to cook Christmas dinner
