Less than six months from having its national good-standing status restored by an oversight organization, Penn State Health on Monday announced it was pausing its liver transplant program amid concerns involving clinical processes and documentation.

Amid concerns that include clinical procedures, Penn State Health is pausing its liver transplant program to allow for a review. Hershey Medical Center.from the nation’s leading organ transplant oversight organization, Penn State Health on Monday announced it has chosen to voluntarily pause that program at the Milton S. Hershey Medical Center.

“Penn State Health has individually notified 63 patients on the waiting list or undergoing evaluation for the waitlist regarding the program’s pause and are proactively working with other liver transplant centers to facilitate a transition of their care.” Additionally, the health system will continue working with UNOS to ensure that the liver transplant program meets patients’ needs and safety.

Among the problems identified during inspections by the state health department and Medicare that led to the OPTN action included: failure to inform national transplant authorities, including Medicare, of personnel changes that could impact the quality of transplants; failure to analyze five instances of newly transplanted patients having to go back to the operating room or be readmitted to the hospital because of complications; and failure to inform two patients they were receiving high-risk...
