Charmelle Green testified about the case of a “disgruntled student athlete who felt that the medical team failed him.”

Ex-Penn State orthopedic consultant Dr. Scott Lynch roams the sideline before the Michigan game at Beaver Stadium. Now he's in Dauphin County Court amid a wrongful firing trial.A former assistant athletic director at Penn State testified Tuesday afternoon that a medical malpractice lawsuit by a football player exposed some of the shortcomings that led to the ouster of the team doctor.

Still, it was one instance described by Green where Lynch’s work for the football team and Penn State Athletics fell short. She blamed this on what she called his “part-time” status at Penn State. Lynch testified earlier that he routinely commuted from Hershey to Penn State on Wednesday evening and stayed through Sunday morning.

She noted that head coach James Franklin held regular retreats designed to improve relations and communication among the football program staff. Green said Lynch “missed the first couple that he was invited to.” The task of driving the players often fell to junior athletic trainers, sometimes in the “dead of winter where weather was a concern,” Green testified.

“The current model was just not working. It was broken,” she testified. “We were looking at exploring options,” Green added of the meeting with Black. “Coach Franklin was informed Dr. Black was looking at different models to solve the gaps in services.”
