Nearly 100 viewers have contacted 8 On Your Side about a text message that informed them of an unpaid Pennsylvania Turnpike toll.It claims to be from Pennsylvania Turnpike Tolls Services. It says you must settle your balance of $8.60 to avoid additional charges of $86. It also provides a link so you can make that payment. 'This is a scam that is not at all associated with the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission.
'We're not sure who is behind this scam, but we do know this is not a security breach,' Orbanek said.The text appears to be coming from an area code in Canada, but scammers can easily spoof phone numbers.'We get 550,000 customers on our Turnpike daily. So, they're trying to use that to their advantage and lure individuals who might have been on the Turnpike to pay their tolls,' Orbanek said.The Turnpike said 86% of its customers use E-ZPass for billing.
