It comes as the Conservative Party continues to see heavy losses in constituencies around the country.

Commons leader Penny Mordaunt is one of the latest senior Conservatives to lose their seat as the party suffers heavy defeats in constituencies across the country.

But Chancellor Jeremy Hunt - who had been seen as vulnerable in his Godalming and Ash constituency - managed to hold on with slender 891 majority. He said the electorate had “delivered a sobering verdict” on the Tories, and apologised to those in his party who have lost their seats. He said he had called Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer to congratulate him on winning.

Former justice secretary Sir Robert Buckland, who also lost his seat, told the BBC his party was was facing "electoral Armageddon". Asked whether he was referring to former home secretary Suella Braverman, who days before polls opened published an article in the Daily Telegraph strongly critical of the government, he said: "Yes, and I'm afraid that's not an isolated example."

“We need to win voters at every single election. If you take your base for granted... your voters will look to other parties.”
