The Leader of the House of Commons revealed how she has made more than 70 visits to local Conservative associations since Mr Sunak became Prime Minister.
Penny Mordaunt has fuelled rumours she is 'on manoeuvres' to succeed Rishi Sunak as Tory leader by boasting of her extensive engagement with local party members.
This would follow an expected drubbing for the Tories at the local elections on 2 May, with Mr Sunak last night warned the Conservatives are on course to lose up to 500 seats – half their councillors facing election. Ms Mordaunt revealed her recent extensive engagement with local Tory associations in a letter to the Daily Telegraph
But Ms Mordaunt corrected the figure, writing in her letter: 'In fact, I have made more than 70 such visits, excluding those in a ministerial capacity and any fundraising and campaigning organised by Conservative Campaign Headquarters. In its report last week, the Daily Telegraph revealed how Ms Mordaunt had travelled to Glasgow, Bolton, Ribble Valley, Altrincham, Anglesey, Brecon and Somerset to meet Tory grassroots members, along with many events nearer London.
