A book co-written by the Conservative leadership challenger offers a glimpse into what she might do if she becomes Prime Minister on 6 September
In it, she compares the Minister for Brexit Opportunities to a £2,600 Abbey Gothic Garden Ruin Kit, saying it is “the Jacob Rees-Mogg of garden ornaments; an artifice of antiquity”., is not just a cheeky swipe at her fellow minister -it offers a glimpse of her vision for the country if she becomes Prime Minister on 6 September.
It does not necessarily mean that Ms Mordaunt will introduce these policies if she makes it to Downing Street, but Conservative MPs and members will be poring over the contents to get an insight into her plans:Ms Mordaunt says that parliament is too “antiquated”, is a “mausoleum” and needs reform. She suggests replacing the current system of appointing peers with an elected second chamber.
She suggests sending Civil Service high flyers on the fast track scheme out of Whitehall to communities “where their talent can be used more productively”, adding: “This would also allow the mandarins of the future to understand the impact of their decisions at the local level.”One policy that Ms Mordaunt has showcased in her leadership campaign is the idea of “social capital pots”, where MPs would have more control over spending in their local areas.
