New rules for Winter Fuel Payments mean only those on Pension Credit will be eligible for the annual heating bill help starting in 2025. The DWP is urging eligible pensioners to claim Pension Credit before December 21, 2024, to avoid missing out on the benefit.
Online guidance from the Department for Work and Pensions ( DWP ) on GOV. UK explains that individuals receiving State Pension on a low income who also receive Attendance Allowance or the middle or highest rate care component of Disability Living Allowance (DLA), Personal Independence Payment (PIP), or Adult Disability Payment (ADP), may be entitled to an extra £81.50 per week of Pension Credit (£326 every four weeks).
Similarly, couples claiming Pension Credit where one person receives a disability benefit will also receive an extra £81.50 each week (£326 per month). Those paid Carer's Allowance may be eligible for an extra £45.60 weekly Pension Credit. The DWP confirmed last month that these payments will rise by 4.1% in April. Older individuals may also qualify for extra Pension Credit if they are entitled to Carer's Allowance but are not being paid it, or are being paid a lower amount because they receive a higher amount from another, income-related benefit like the State Pension. Nearly 1.4 million elderly individuals across Great Britain, including over 125,000 residing in Scotland, are currently receiving Pension Credit. The DWP recently confirmed this could provide an average of £4,200 in support for the upcoming year. However, the latest DWP figures suggest 760,000 eligible pensioners are not claiming the benefit they are entitled to. It's crucial to make a claim before December 21, 2024, due to a new rule change to Winter Fuel Payments, reports the Daily Record. This change means only those on an income-related benefit like Pension Credit will be eligible for the annual heating bill help, worth between £100 and £300. New claims submitted to the DWP by the deadline on Saturday, December 21 - which later turn out to be successful - will also qualify for a backdated Winter Fuel Payment
