Michael Hubbard, 82, is accused of murdering wife and mother to his two children, Frances, 76, at their sheltered housing bungalow in Brooke, Norfolk.

An elderly man with dementia, who is charged with stabbing his wife of 50 years to death, has been found unfit to stand trial.

Officers had been called to the couple’s bungalow to investigate reports that a woman had been stabbed, on September 23, last year.Neighbours said they saw him failing to respond to armed police shouting at him to put the weapon down, before officers shot him with a rubber bullet.Mr Hubbard was detained under the Mental Act after being arrested and was charged with the murder of his wife in April, this year.

Judge Stephen Holt described the case as ‘tragic’, adding a hearing would be held on December 16 for a jury to decide whether Mr Hubbard did kill his wife. Neighbours recalled after the death of Mrs Hubbard that she and her husband would go out ‘arm in arm’ up to three times a day.Rubber bullets, officially known as Attenuating Energy Projectiles, are usually 37mm soft-nosed projectiles fired from a gun.
