After a mistake was picked up on his benefit application, one pensioner was told he’d have to pay over £250 to the DWP every month for the next six years
One pensioner was living in a worst-case scenario when his Pension Credit application was reassessed six years after he started receiving it. When some discrepancies came to light, the DWP claimed it had been a mistake on his part and left him with a staggering £22,000 bill to repay.
Robert Vincent shared his harrowing experience with The Sun as part of an investigation into benefit recipients being wrongly told they’ve defrauded the system and need to pay back their benefits. The Bridgend was being blamed for reportedly providing incorrect information relating to his pension income when he first applied for Pension Credit.
No action was taken on these occasions and the department agreed to cancel his debt. A spokesperson confirmed that he had been issued with a “full refund” of the money already taken as part of the payment plan and that the DWP had “apologised for the error in handling this case”.
