Nearly a million people are missing out on Pension Credit, a benefit they’re eligible for and could give them access to the newly restricted Winter Fuel Payments.
The change to Winter Fuel Payments has caused havoc for the millions of households relying on the extra £200 or £300 every winter to keep their homes heated. Now, the seasonal government support will only be available to people claiming certain benefits, most notably Pension Credit.
He dubbed the situation a “national tragedy” that so many people were going without a benefit they were due worth over £3,300 per year. Speaking on Good Morning Britain in 2022, the Money-Saving Expert explained: “Here is my rule of thumb; if you were of state penson, age 66 or over now, and you have total income under £200 then I would absolutely get in touch with the Pension Credit system.
For couples, both sides need to be over state pension age and don’t necessarily have to be married or in a civil partnership. Instead, you are considered a couple for Pension Credit if you live together. Only one partner needs to apply and provide the income and savings information for both partners.
