The yellow 'H' symbols can be seen on lampposts, drain covers and street markers - but many people have no idea what they mean and why they're all over the country
People stroll by them every day often without a second glance, but these innocuous signs play a crucial role in public safety. South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue has taken to social media with a video clarifying the purpose of the yellow 'H' symbols on lampposts, underlining their critical function.
Spotted not just on lampposts, but also gracing drain covers and street markers, these 'H' symbols reveal vital information with two numbers. The number at the top specifies the diameter of the mains providing water to the hydrant in millimetres, while the bottom figure notes how many metres away the hydrant is from the marker.
