Sisters Erin Howard, 33, and Amy Power, 35, alongside Amy's husband, Adam Power, 37, from's newest venue, Canto cafe. The cafe, on Elson Road in Formby, officially opened its doors at 8am today after a soft launch over the weekend. Canto cafe will serve up a brunch-focused menu, with all-day options such as the Canto breakfast, breakfast burgers, toasties, 'super' spuds and more Mediterranean-inspired dishes such as sardines on toast.
There will also be a selection of hot drinks, including supplies from Liverpool business West Coast Coffee, sweet dishes and a pastry counter. After living in London for several years, the sisters moved back to the area where their shared love of coffee grew into a dream to run a coffee shop. Amy told the: "We gave it a bit of time and thought will we do this? Will we not?
Eventually we walked past this place one day and it just felt completely right.
"I don't know what it was, just the building, everything about it and where it was, just said to me, 'This is the coffee shop that we've always dreamt about'. We came inside, we saw the space. It's a bit quirky, it's a bit of an odd shape, but somehow it worked. It really reminds me of the places that I used to work in in London and the sort of atmosphere that we wanted to create.
"The cafe's name means 'corner' in Portuguese, inspired by Lisbon's brunch culture which they believe is the best. With the help of Adam, who has worked in construction for 20 years, and the support of family and friends, the new business owners got to work on transforming the space into their dream venue. Amy added: "We've been indecisive with picking, but every detail in here has been thought out really thoroughly.
Honestly, the tiles took us probably two months to decide what a tile would be, but it is the feature of the job.
"It seems ridiculous, but it takes sometimes two weeks for a tile to come in, and if it didn't say something to us, then we just got rid of it. It sounds ridiculous, but it had to be exactly how we imagined it, the feel, the vibe, the atmosphere.
"The neighbours have been very patient with us. They've been banging on the door, waiting to come in and we've been like 'We're not quite ready yet'. We let them come in and have a little nose, they've watched us along the way.
" The family held a soft launch over the weekend to prepare for its official opening. Erin said: "It's just so nice. Everyone comes in, they just say 'wow, I've just calmed right down. That's exactly what we're going for. "
