New rules have also been brought in on the storage of e-bikes.
A Nottinghamshire council has banned staff from storing or charging e-scooters and e-bikes in its buildings due to the fire risk they pose. Nottinghamshire County Council recently sent a message to staff telling them that although e-bikes in particular were an "environmentally friendly alternative to cars", the risk of overheating also had to be considered.
Guidance from the National Fire Chiefs Council on the topic says: "Batteries can be damaged by dropping them or crashing e-bikes or e-scooters. Where the battery is damaged, it can overheat and catch fire without warning. Check your battery regularly for any signs of damage and if you suspect it is damaged it should be replaced and should not be used or charged.
Wayne Bexton, the Service Director for Green Growth, Investment and Assets at Nottinghamshire County Council said: "We recognise the significant value of e-bikes and encourage their use as a sustainable form of transport but we have to prioritise the safety of our workforce from the risks posed by the batteries which can be highly combustible when they overheat.
