Charges are set to go up as the council faces huge financial pressure
Stockport residents are set to be hit with a council tax hike, new bin charges and new car parking fees. The moves are planned by the council to cut costs and boost income as the borough scrimps to save millions as part of its annual budget in the face of huge financial uncertainty.
A five per cent council tax increase is planned, which would add £100 to yearly bills for Band D households in Stockport. The garden waste proposal would make the council up to £2m but has sparked massive backlash, with more than 8,000 residents sharing their thoughts in a public consultation. He went on to say that the feedback “hasn’t taken away the need for us to make savings and balance the books.” Without the garden waste charge, Coun Roberts said the council would face having to close “every single library across Stockport” to make the same level of savings.
