Not reporting a change of email address or of mobile number could impact your monthly payment

The latest figures from the Department for Work and Pensions show that at the end of January 2023 there were 5.9 million people claiming Universal Credit. The means-tested benefit is a payment designed to help people on a low income, out of work, or if they cannot work due to ill health or caring responsibilities.

Changes that need to be reported include getting a new mobile number or email address, switching to a different bank account, moving address and your rent going up or down. DWP guidance on GOV.UK warns: “You could be taken to court or have to pay a penalty if you give wrong information or do not report a change in your circumstances.”

DWP warns: “Changes in your circumstances can affect how much you’re paid for your whole assessment period - not just from the date you report them.”How to report a change You can report a change of circumstances by signing in to your Universal Credit account on GOV.UK. It’s important to note that most benefits are paid in arrears so you will only receive the new payment rates from May 16.
