Michelle Yeoh: 'People say older women can't do things but I got the role of a lifetime'
Michelle Yeoh is having the best year of her four decades-long career – and it’s only March. Last week, as she won the Independent Spirit Award for Best Lead Performance in Everything Everywhere All At Once, the 60-year-old actress was overcome with emotion as she stood on the podium, clutching yet another gong.
She dedicated her award “to all our mothers,” saying “without our mothers none of us would be here.” Gesturing towards her cast and crew, she then thanked “all the ladies sitting at that table who support their husbands.” “All these years, you know, as an actress, as a woman… once you get to a certain age, they start putting you in a box and telling you all the things you cannot do,” she says. “So can you imagine over the last 10 years, 15 years, I’ve been coming to the stage where you go, ‘Seriously, why is it the guys still get to go out and save the day? And I’m relegated to sitting at home by the phone.’
She says: “For me, it was like the opportunity, in a way, of a lifetime. Because I was doing like five genres of film, right? There was science fiction, it was comedy, it was horror, it was action, it was drama.” “I think what I loved most was a lot of the young people who have seen it, when they leave, and they go, ‘I’m gonna call my mom’,” says Michelle, who has never had children herself. “And I think that means so much to me. Like, we never give up on each other. The movie is about love. It’s about kindness, it’s about never giving up on your family.”
